3 Important Things To Consider When Choosing a Direct Cremation

Deciding which direct cremation provider to choose when a loved one passes away can be difficult. It is especially hard if you are alone, and find yourself with the responsibility of making a practical decision during a vulnerable time.

Direct cremations are becoming increasingly popular. There may be a few reasons for their gradual increase into mainstream society.

For one, the legendary David Bowie chose to be cremated privately and then have his ashes scattered in Bali.

The coronavirus pandemic caused families to choose direct cremation and then hold separate celebration of life ceremonies at a later date.

And finally, direct cremations tend to be one of the most affordable and even green services in the funeral ecosystem.

When you’re trying to decide which funeral provider to elect to carry out your loved one’s direct cremation, the elements you should weigh highly include affordability, sustainability, and transparency in service.

Planning ahead and obtaining all the information you need to make an informed decision will give you peace of mind when the time comes. That is why we have created this quick guide to elaborate on aspects of affordability, sustainability, and transparency.

What Should I Look For Before Booking A Direct Cremation?

1. Affordability

Direct cremation is the most affordable way to conduct a funeral, because there is no attended funeral service.

This means there is no need to pay for extras such as a celebrant, funeral director fees, flowers, or a limousine or hearse. Direct cremation covers the funeral fundamentals. This includes: the crematorium fees, doctor’s fees if applicable, the coffin, and potentially a small funeral director fee.

If you do a quick search on funeral directors in your area, you’ll often find a common theme. Prices tend to vary, and overall, understanding how much you’ll need to pay in the end turns out to be quite confusing.

We recommend doing research on a few funeral providers and compare their prices. Ensure you understand what is included in the service and what is not. Oftentimes, this differs from provider to provider.

If you are struggling to pay for a funeral, then perhaps reach out to the funeral director to see what other options are available to you. Some providers, like ourselves, will be able to assist in helping you apply for the Funeral Expenses Payment

2. Sustainability

The reality is that being “eco-friendly” or sustainable is no longer a trendy element of a business. It is, quite frankly, a necessity.

Unfortunately, the funeral industry has a long way to go in terms of its sustainability, making Neo Cremations unique in this aspect. When you purchase a direct cremation with Neo, we pledge to plant a Remembrance Tree in their memory. We do this out of respect for you, your loved one, and the planet.

Why is sustainability important?

Caring about the environment and placing sustainability at the centre of our business model fuels us to do our best work. When choosing a direct cremation service, it is important to take into consideration the values of the company. At the end of the day, the direct cremation provider you go with will be the ones looking after your loved one when the time comes.

You may read more about our environmental and social impact on our 2020 Impact Report, and also read more about our Remembrance Tree to understand more about the lasting-legacy we aim to provide families.

3. Transparency

If you have ever tried searching for a funeral director’s prices, chances are you found it a difficult space to navigate. Transparent pricing along with the service terms and conditions is paramount when choosing a direct cremation provider.

Just recently, the Competitions and Market Authority (CMA) mandated that all funeral service providers display services pricing on their websites. This is integral to ensure that vulnerable people are not being taken advantage of while making funeral arrangements for their loved one.

The new CMA rules also prohibits funeral directors to pay incentives to hospitals and when it comes to our pricing, our direct cremations are an all inclusive cost of £1,295. The only element that is not included are the doctor’s fees, which a family may not even need to pay if a coroner is involved.

Choosing a direct cremation by Neo Cremations

Our direct cremation service is £1,295 plus doctor’s fees. When you choose to book a direct cremation with us, we will ensure your loved one is looked after with care. Our direct cremation service includes:

Taking your loved one into our care

This means we will come and collect from a variety of different locations, whether it be from a private residence, hospital, hospice, care home, nursing home, or maybe another funeral director. Our all inclusive price of £1,295 does not charge any extra for what are normally considered “complex collections.”

Handling of all administrative paperwork

We liaise directly with hospices, nursing homes, doctor’s surgeries, hospitals, registrars offices, coroners, and crematoria to ensure that we get all paperwork together and in time. We usually are able to get all paperwork together a few days after the direct cremation booking takes place.

Once we have all the appropriate documentation, we will book a “committal date” at the crematorium. A committal date is the cremation date. We always supply the family with the date, time, and location of cremation.

Compassionate support every step of the way

Sustainable and biodegradable materials

Our urns are modern, simple and made from biodegradable materials. When we hand deliver the ashes back to you, they come in a discreet drawstring bag. We also provide the family with the cremation certificate and Certificate of Reforestation.

Our coffins are also eco-friendly. Unfortunately we cannot supply cardboard coffins as these aren’t widely accepted at crematoriums across the UK.

Continuous updates throughout the journey

Our experienced team is there to answer any questions you may have. We always keep our families updated throughout the process. Since direct cremation means no attended funerals, we do our best to ensure families feel as included and part of the journey.

Families we assist can expect an update every 24 to 48 hours.

A personal hand delivery by a Neo Grieving Consultant

Once the ashes are ready for delivery, we send out our dedicated Neo Grieving Consultants to hand deliver the ashes back to the next of kin.
